It’s Quarter-Finals Day in the Women’s Euros and we’re celebrating another talented sportswoman at William Hill. We caught up with Lyndsay McGregor, Business Performance Manager, about women’s football and her own experience as a Referee.

"Sport has always been a big part of my life. I got my first season ticket for Tynecastle, the home of the famous Heart of Midlothian, when I was 10 years old. I started playing football at primary school and in those days, I was only allowed to play in league games and had to miss the cup games - something that would be considered ridiculous now. I swapped my football boots at high school for hockey and lacrosse, eventually picking up football again whilst at university. Woman's football had become slightly more popular by then; however, we were still always given the worst and windiest pitches to play on."
How did you become a Referee?
"I decided to study for my referee exams as I was only playing once a week and for fun. The SFA (Scottish Football Association) held a recruitment drive to attract females and promote the sport. I found it fascinating and loved how people have such differing opinions. I also found well known Scottish Ref, Willie Collum, much more personable than I thought he would be! The best bit is when someone tries to explain the offside rule to me."
Which players have inspired you?
"My footballing idol has and always will be John Colquhoun, a great little left winger that could really run. Heart of Midlothian bought him from Celtic for £90k and later sold him to Millwall for £720k – it was such a sad day."
How has women’s football changed since you started playing?
"The changes over the years have been staggering. It really is great to see so many females participating in the sport, hopefully we can attract more and bridge the skills gap. We have some great players; however, we do need many, many more. I’ve still got my Puma Kings if Scotland ever qualify!"
How does it feel to see William Hill championing women’s football and the Euros this year?
"In a summer without football, it’s great to see that William Hill have championed this tournament. Having the tournament in the UK has really elevated the sport and hopefully will attract more female players. Saying that, I can’t wait for the start of the Scottish Premiership!"
